Fort Worth Brahmas

The Texas Brahmas Hockey Team Fan Page

The newly re-named Texas Brahmas introduced their new head coach Monday night (May 21, 2007), less than two weeks after announcing their return to the Central Hockey League.

It turns out the coach was already a familiar face to Brahmas fans, many of whom were in attendance at North Richland Hills' City Hall.

Dan Wildfong, who played his entire eight-year professional career with the Bossier-Shreveport Mudbugs - the Brahmas' biggest rival - was named the eighth coach in the franchise's nine-year history.  The gritty 31-year-old left winger, who has never coached before, signed a two-year contract for a undisclosed amount, but general manager Mike Barack said it includes incentives for making the postseason and winning a championship.

"We don't call this rebuilding," Barack said, "This is basically a new start.  We're building a brand new team.  We all expect instant results.  The goal is a championship.  Dan has been there and done that with Shreveport."

Forbes MacPherson, Wildfong's teammate for six seasons who is also Didney Crosby's first cousin, was named the assistant coach, and goaltender David Cacciola is the first player on the 18-man roster.

Wildfong was named to the CHL All-Star team in 2000, 2003, and 2007 and averaged more than a point a game in 488 career games.

"I wasn't the most liked player by Brahmas fans, but I see a passion with the ownership here," said Wildfong, who was also celebrating his second wedding anniversary Monday.

Wildfong's biggest obstacle will be recruiting almost an entire team that will start playing in October.  The Brahmas don't have the luxury of an expansion draft.

The Brahmas will play a majority of their 32 home games in the North Richland Hills' Blue Line ice facility.

The Brahmas suspended operations in May 2006 when they could not reach a financial agreement with the Fort Worth Convention Center for playing their home games.
